May 2014 Survey

We conducted a survey to establish exactly what was going on with the insurance market in Morpeth. We delivered questionnaires to all the properties that were affected by the flood and a lot of adjoining ones. The results are a snapshot of what the state of affairs was in October 2010, over two years after the flood.

Some key findings are highlighted here:

2010 Survey Results

As you know Morpeth has flooded several times in the last few years. Northumberland County Council and the Environment Agency are building flood defences to reduce future flood risk, however in the meantime many of us have experienced large increases in our insurance premiums and excesses for both Buildings and Contents cover. The Government is currently negotiating with the insurance industry for a scheme that would make cover affordable and available in the future. We have collected data on what is happening today so that we can influence Government policy.

Once the Flood Alleviation Scheme has been completed most of us should see a sharp drop in our insurance premiums. To ensure that this happens we need took a snapshot of today’s premiums and will be doing another survey after it has been completed. If decreases are not filtering through Morpeth Flood Action Group will be setting up a Helpdesk to assist residents to get the best possible deals from insurance companies.
